Thought liking pineapple on pizza was a dealbreaker? Well, there’s a new dating rule in town and it’s all about ditching alcohol-centered first dates. Girlboss writers Jennifer and Victoria debate the pros and cons of this new approach. |
(Liquid) Courage, My Love |
To drink or not to drink, that is the question! According to a survey conducted by dating app Flirtini, 50 percent of women and 28 percent of men never drink on a first date—and we’re unpacking both sides of the latest dating evolution. In Defense of *Not* Drinking on a First Date
“Alcohol has seeped its way into every aspect of dating. Just look at the prompts on Bumble! ‘Swipe right if you love whisky.’ ‘First rounds on me if: you like tequila.’ ‘I just want to find someone to get wine drunk with.’ As a sober girlie, it can be very isolating. I have been on dates with three sober guys recently, and a few that don’t drink much, and we’ve had so much fun doing things that don’t revolve around a bar. Think: a baseball game, an intimate folk concert, a picnic, glow-in-the-dark mini putt. It makes you think outside of the box, and I love it! I try to embrace the butterflies and the nerves. It means you care.” — Victoria, senior writer
In Defense of Drinking on a First Date
“Despite the rise in popularity of staying sober whilst dating, the idea of meeting a stranger from Hinge irl leaves me shaking like those little white dogs with anxiety issues (too niche?) The point is, I’m a nervous person and as a self-proclaimed introverted extrovert, I love how a G&T coaxes me out of my shell and takes the edge off of being in an unfamiliar social environment. But drinking isn’t only for soothing pre-date jitters, it’s naturally integrated into my social life, associated with celebratory moments, and I’m looking for someone to share that practice with. Break out the bubbly! ” — Jennifer, staff writer
As for whether or not one approach is better than the other? We’re both still single despite our varying preferences and no amount of tea (or tequila) can soothe how trash dating is in the modern day age. |

How to Not Get Bamboozled by Black Friday |
In high school, I used to treat Black Friday like a sport. I’d slap on my Stan Smiths, skip 3rd-period gym (jk if you’re reading this, mom), and race off to the nearest Topshop to compete with other shopping fanatics hunting for the best deals.
But now I’m an adult with real responsibilities which means less impulsive shopping and more mindful consumption. Alas, I’m only human, I love a good deal and you probably do too. So here’s how to stay in control when Black Friday/Cyber Monday shopping—as opposed to it controlling you! Think About Cost per Wear
You may think you’re saving money by buying that $25 H&M doorbuster sweater, but how often are you gonna wear that bejeweled crewneck you bought on impulse? Resist the urge to be seduced by savings and center products that have a good cost per wear/use. Ask All the Questions Here are the top q’s to ask to check yourself when shopping: 1. Think of at least five uses or outfits for this item on the spot. 2. Do you have something similar to this? 3. How long have you thought about this item? 4. Are you just blinded by the discount? Would you buy it at full price? (if the answer is no, that’s a BIG hint)
5. If you lost this item in the future, would you re-buy it? Get Real With Your Shopping Habits BFFR: Are you purchasing that wellness journal because you’re gonna use it or because you think it will fill the void? Before hitting “add to cart,” reflect on your state of mind and consider if you're purchasing something to fulfill a fantasy, avoid FOMO, or soothe a worry. And my final tip? Avoid the crowds and shop the deals online, few things in life are worth a 6 a.m. lineup. |
